About Arvid Benson
The funeral for Moorhead businessman Arvid P. Benson will be Tuesday at 1 in Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Moorhead, with burial in Prairie Home Cemetery, Moorhead. Visitation will be Monday from 5-7, with a prayer service at 7, in Wright Funeral Home, Moorhead, and one hour before the funeral in the church. Mr. Benson, 1 2nd St. S., Moorhead, died Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo. He was 85. Born on March 24, 1916, near Hannaford, N.D., Mr. Benson also grew up and attended school near Hannaford. He married Patricia Durbahn Aug. 25, 1940. He opened his first business, a chick hatchery, in 1935. In 1937 he moved to Moorhead to manage Northwestern Hatchery, which he later purchased. In 1954 the hatchery evolved into Arvid Benson Supply, Inc., which was a furniture, carpeting and appliance business. He was also a land developer and was involved in several different development ventures. At one point he owned apartments, houses and shopping centers in eight states. He was a collector of antique and classic cars, and was involved in the Bonanzaville Museum, West Fargo, and the annual Rollag (Minn.) Steam Threshers' Reunion. He is survived by his wife; a son, Michael, Moorhead; two daughters, Cheryl (Thorpe) Running, St. Cloud, Minn., Kimberly (Steven) Zimmerman, Moorhead; a brother, Richard, Kalamazoo, Mich.; four sisters, Dorothy (Russell) Wahl, Hannaford, Geraldine Westley, Exeter, N.H., Mary (Harry) Hiebert, Lake Havasu City, Ariz., Ruth (Ron) Berge, Dazey, N.D.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
