About Alva Zahren
Alva Mae Zahren, the only daughter of Charles and Mary Sangl VanDeMark was born October 6, 1905 near Spirit Lake, Iowa. She moved with her parents to a farm near Everly, Iowa as a young girl. She was baptized as an infant in the Lutheran faith. She moved to the Hartley vicinity in 1915 and was united in marriage at Hartley on June 6, 1923 to Edward Zahren. They resided on a farm near Milford until 1931 when they moved near Hartley and in 1943 to a farm east of Sutherland, Iowa. In December of 1962 they moved to their present home in town. She joined the Methodist Church in 1928 at Hartley and was presently a member of the United Methodist Church at Sutherland. She was a charter member of the Hartley WSCS. She was also a member of the Miriam Circle of The United Methodist Women, the Sutherland American Legion Auxiliary and the Cheerful Workers Society of Waterman township. She passed away January 7, 1977 at the hospital in Hartley, Iowa at the age of 71. Preceding her in death were her parents, one brother, and her husband in 1973. Left to cherish her memory are her son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Darlene Zahren of Sutherland, three grandchildren, Terry Zahren, Mrs. Miles (Mary) Puhrmann and Tammy Zahren, two great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
