About Alfredo Vaiani

Alfredo Vaiani Alfredo Vaiani, 85, of Galveston passed away Thursday, September 25, 2003, at UTMB Hospital. Funeral Mass will be 1:00 p.m., Monday, September 29, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Frank Fabj as Celebrant. Burial will follow the service at Galveston Memorial Park in Hitchcock. The family will receive visitors from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m., Sunday, September 28, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home. A rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. Alfredo was bom July 8, 1918, in Galveston, Texas. He graduated from Ball High School with the class of 1936, where he lettered in football. Alfredo then joined the U. S. Army, where he was a 2nd lieutenant graduate of the Army Infantry School at Ft. Benning, Georgia, and served from 1942 through 1945. His distinguished career was with the famed combat experienced Army 9th Infantry Division in the North African Desert and later in Normandy, France, with the 9th also supporting the D-Day invasion. His honorable discharge was recognized and he received several decorations, including the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star Medal for gallantly in action. He ' was recommended for the rank of major at the time of his discharge in 1945. Captain Vaiani loved his country and he served it well. During his working career, Alfredo was involved in many businesses, and after retiring, he enjoyed spending time with his family. Alfredo is preceded in death by his parents Lido and Susie Vaniani, sister, Luisa Vaiani. He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Fernanda Vaiani, of Galveston; daughter, Lisa Schweitzer and husband, Jim, of Galveston; four grandchildren, Holly, Timothy, Andrew, and Catherine; brother, Alvaro Vaiani, of Houston; and numerous other relatives and friends. Pallbearers will be Timothy Schweitzer, grandson; Andrew Schweitzer, grandson; Arch Panfilli, Jr.; Ross Novelli, Sr.; and Maurizio Antonelli. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Mother Seton Fund at Sacred Heart Church.
