About Alden Rose

Alden was the youngest child of Frank and Ida Sylvia Rose. Born in Dartmouth Massachusetts, Alden enjoyed life on his father's 90 acre dairy farm on Smith Neck Road in Dartmouth. At age 9 he had a pony named Dickie that he often road to school. Alden had a knack for animal care and taught his horses to do tricks. During his life he had cats, dogs, horses and cattle. During WWII, Alden volunteered for the military and passed the exams, but was told by the military they needed farmers, therefore Alden served his county as a farmer during war time. Alden met his wife Alice on a blind date arranged by his cousin Ruben Servis. In their youth, Alice and Alden lived near Slocums River on opposite sides of the river. Alden would row his boat from his father's farm to rendezvous with Alice at Barney's Joy Beach where she lived. Alice and Alden eloped and were married June 6, 1942. They were married in the living room of Alice's best friend Tilly Sheehan in Fall River MA. Alden and Alice had 5 children born between 1943 and 1959. Alden's skills as a dairymen kept him busy all his life. In 1942 he managed a herd in Acushnet MA, address 1235 Main St. In 1943 he was the manager of a dairy in Huntington Harbor Long Island where their 1st child was born. By 1946 he was manager of Congress Philip Philbin's "Philcrest Farm" in Bolton MA where their 2nd child was born. By 1953, Alden and Alice purchased a 110 acre dairy farm on Nelson road in Sterling MA where their 3rd child was born. The house in Stirling was at least 200 years old when Alden & Alice moved there; apparently there were ancient Indian burial mounds nearby. By 1955 Alden sold the Sterling farm and moved to Clinton MA where their 4th & 5th children were born. In 1959 Alden was working for Curtis Candy Company as a dairy supply salesmen. July 1959 he accepted a position in southern California with Adohr Farms. Alden's wife Alice and their 5 children, ages 6 months to 16 years old, arrived in October 1959 to their new home in La Habra California. By 1963 Alden moved his family to Ontario CA where he became the owner of his own dairy farm supply business. In 1965 Alden purchased a home at 517 W. Granada Ct. in Ontario for $17K. In 1974 Alden purchased a 10 acre dairy farm complex in Chino CA which included 3 houses and 4 barns for $140K. During the 1960's and 1970's Alden expanded his business into central and northern California. Alden pioneered sales into the Tijuana Mexico region where he introduced modern dairy farming technics. August 18, 1970 Alden received The Dairy Shrine Club "Life Membership" award for his contribution to the dairy farm industry. In 1992, Alden retired to Upland CA where he enjoyed life on a former lemon orchard. During the 1990's Alden enjoyed restoring vintage bicycles and organized groups to ride in local 4th of July parades. Alden and Alice enjoyed traveling to their hometown of Dartmouth a few times with their daughter Rebecca and grandchildren. They also traveled to Florida to visit their daughter Karen's family. In the mid 90's Alden helped his son Alden Jr. move to Maine and drove cross country with him. One of the things attributed to Alden was the use of advertising slogan "Real Milk". While attending a dairy farmer convention in California they served "non dairy creamer" to the guests; Alden chided them that they should be serving "Real Milk" at a dairy farm convention. Alden was a man of faith and member of the Knights of Columbus at his church in Claremont CA. Alden and his wife Alice raised 5 children of their own and helped raise 4 grandchildren. They always kept an open door for all family members. September 24, 2001, Alden passed away at his home in Upland. he was surrounded by the love of his wife, children and grandchildren.
