Thomas Meagher's Obituary
My dad Thomas Meagher was born in Meriden, Connecticut. He was also known as Tommy or Tommy Boy. He was a tough man with a big heart. He had gorilla hands and sailor tattoos. He was a gambler, and his favorite card game was knock gin rummy.
Although we were on welfare when I was a kid, my dad always had a job working "under the table". For awhile he was a garbage man, or as he called it a sanitation engineer, and often said he took the job for the "benefits". He worked construction jobs "when the ground was soft" and also hauled steel which he continued to do into his 70s.
In his later years, he was able to open his own bar Good 'Ol Tom's Place in Meriden. One guy named Jose came to the bar often spending most of his unemployment check drinking. Jose had no teeth. So, my dad put a cigar box behind the bar marked Jose's teeth to raise money for a set of false teeth for him. That was my dad. By all measures, my dad was an old school east coast guy and a hard worker. And although he had difficulty showing his emotions, he always provided for our family, protected us, and had a heart of gold.
